Every first Sunday of the month is “children time” at the Völkerkunde Museum in Rotherbaum. The museum is very child-friendly in many areas and all about the diverse cultures of the world. From the Indians to the Incas, Mayas, Africans, and, and, and … their clothes are shown and their homes, there are life-sized teepees, bamboo huts and more, and most of them can be entered. And with the prospect of gloomy weather for the weekend it is a nice alternative to being shut to your own four walls!
This Sunday childen time is all about animal masks from Africa. What kind of animals are often used as masks and why, what’s so special about the antelope? At the beginning the children can participate in a little tour of Katherina Steinebach and Katja Turé, both great museum educators (I did not even know that there is such a profession, until I recently encountered one in the Altona Museum and was completely thrilled!), during which they explain everything in an exciting way. In addition, the children can craft a colorful mask themselves. Ask at the entrance where the meeting point is. Probably in the Africa Department. The crafting will be offered continuously from 2:30 to 5:00 pm.

When you are done there is one more nice thing that you can do here: turn into the Binderstrasse. There, you will find a replica of the famous zigzag bridge from Shanghai. If you have younger children with you: it’ss fun to run around. For older girls and boys: give them a camera and have them find and shoot the most beautiful sceneries – there are lots. If you like, indulge a small tea ceremony in the Chinese tea house whilst watching them – definitely something special.
