100% Strawberries: Gut Wulksfelde, recipies & tombola

Discard jars with screw cap? Noooo! Use them to make strawberry jam with your children! It is a perfect summer gift for granny in UK – especially if presented in the super-cute jars from Bentoshop. Another super-nice location to pick them is from mid-June onwards the Gut Wulksfelde (kilo price starts at € 3.50). They are growing organic strawberries and you have to bring your own containers (ask for empty mushroom baskets when next in a grocery store or bring your tubbers). Strawberry picking next to always results in happy and satified faces and brother and sister will be competing about who picked the most and the biggest. After bending down your backs relax your muscles on the sunny terasse of the Gutsküche having a strawberry ice cream! Thereafter, a quick step into the farm shop to buy jam sugar (Gelierzucker) and maybe there is still some time left to explore the little zoo, playground and feed the bunnies with dandelion before heading home, dress up with kitchen apron and wooden spoon and go get your strawberry jam certificate:

Here is an absolutely simple recipe for strawberry jam – and if you buy the jam sugar thatere is always a recipe on the packaging:
For 1 kg strawberries you’ll need 333 gr of jam sugar (Gelierzucker – available in every supermarket). Make sure the glases are absolutely clean – I usually dive them into cooking water for 2 minutes –  in order to avoid molding. Wash the strawberries and get rid of the green stalks and cut them into smaller pieces. Take a saucepan, large enough that the strawberries only fill 2/3 of it, since the mass must boil and you don’t want strawberries allover your kitchen or on your childrens T-shirts (although probably inevitable). Add the corresponding amount of jam sugar (according to instructions on the packaging). Add lemon juice and put high heat. When the mass begins to bubble, stir, then reduce the heat for 2-3 minutes. Depending on your preferences, you can puree the jam or leave the pieces. Another fun activity is to cut some elder blossoms and add them for 5 minutes, than take them out – they add a wonderfull flavour. Another variation is to add vanilla or chopped mint. Now the children’s job is done and the jam must be filled into the glasses as hot as possible. Shut Fix jars tightly and let them cool upside down (ie put on the lid).
