I am a little late with this post, but I caught a real man bug last week :/

A boat trip on the Elbe is a great experience and the two hour drive is exciting enough for even smaller children to survive the trip without boredom. Especially when there is so much to see. Every now and then they will blow the big horn. Likewise, the 3,5 hours in Bleckede can be spent with a couple of nice activities. We do always prefer an extensive lunch because we do enjoy eating so much. The Cafe Fritz is located right at the cute little rennaissance castle with its museum. They have a sword with which criminals in the Middle Ages were beheaded. Uuuuh. Or you can visit the biosphere reserve with an aquarium where Elbe fish can be spotted. There is also a nice playground. If your children can already behave well (but that’s anyway not so much of a problem during lunch time) and if you enjoy eating so much as we do a very recommendable location is the Wohnküche of Oliver Barda. That’s real food experience in the province. You should probably reserve, because the restaurant is tiny. A lot of fun is also handcar driving (“Draisinefahren“). It is feasable within the 3,5 hours, and you could then wrap a picnic basket and have your lunch outside. Or you decide to have lunch at the restaraurant Waldfrieden. For non-experienced families the pure riding time is about 1,5 hours – so lenty of time. Best to take a cab to get from the ferry landing to the station. The weather should hold, too.
