Both places I recommend today are located in the former gravel mining area of Rissen, the very Western suburb of Hamburg. The mining time, however, is long past and today, after renaturation, it has developed into a beautiful park. The former mining areas were turned into little ponds and lakes which now complement to the idyllic atmosphere. Many walkways want to be explored by bike or foot and September / October is the best time of the year to search for mushrooms. The final highlight may be the huge playground where one can easily stay for the next hour(s) or the skate park, if your children are a little older. The skate park is actually one of Hamburg’s favourite. It has only relatively recently been opened and offers anything a skater’s heart would beat for. It has therefore been quickly adopted by Hamburg’s skating scene and with a bit of luck you can watch the cool skaters doing their acrobatic moves.
