My children always love this: exploring secret paths between flower beds and trees, hiding from the parents or just walking around and discovering a new secret behind every corner. The Arboretum in Ellerhoop provides for the perfect space : 4000 different species and varieties of plants can be admired and there is also a wooden playground for the kids and you can even see models of herbivorous dinosaurs in the stone age area. There are fossils and stones to marvel at, as well as the cast of the world’s biggest Ammonites, and an exhibition of ambers. And then you can also go on a treasure hunt and search for real ambers. Most recently, a replica of the world’s largest sequoia has been erected, the General Sherman Tree in the Sequoia National Park in California. The ten-meter high trunk is accessible from inside, and a small sequoia has been planted there to one day blow up the artistic trunk. The echo in the tree is amazing. I love the tortuous bamboo passage and the herb garden with over 10 varieties of sage.

The tour lasts for about an hour – depending on your children’s joy to rant arount and play in the sand. If you fancy tasty homemade pies you should pay a visit to the cafe in the old Münsterhof, situated in the park. The website www.gartenrouten-sh.de shows lovely pictures of the park and Wikipedia also gives a good impression as to what to expect – and expectations are so high that one tends to rescheudle ones weekend plans.
