I like the Museumsdorf Volksdorf. Not only because it is around the corner from us. I just love the idyllic atmosphere, created and preserved in these open-air museums ;). The Museumsdorf Volksdorf is the most easily attainable museum of this type for Hamburgers. Simply take the U1 to Volksdorf, get out of the station (towards the swimming pool / church) and walk the trail straight ahead for 2 minutes and it will appear right in front of you.
Almost every other weekend the museum village hosts a nice event. This Sunday is a farmer’s market hold. How can it be otherwise, the theme is autumn and herbs. For children it is great here, the terrain is not very big and there is plenty to discover, pigs, geese, chickens and goats, and a big horse, the small routes in cottage garden, the old grain mill and the large farmer’s house. For next to every child the smith in full working gear is the most fascinating figure. At these events usually bread is baked in the old wood-burning oven and all the buildings are open to visit.
If you want to combine this with the large playground Schemmannstrasse you can definitely not go wrong. On the way back to the tube station I recommend to walk along the road Im Alten Dorfe (left hand), since you’ll get past a very good ice cream parlor!
